Bikeability Tour

You’ve heard that Portland is America’s #1 cycling city, but what makes it so? Learn about the bike bill that started to change our transportation infrastructure in the 1970′s, the strategies Portland has used to implement our current cycling infrastructure, and changes that have yet to come.

On this tour we explore not just Portland’s bike lanes, but our Active Transportation System as a whole. Recent improvements in bike and pedestrian safety facilities are numerous, lending plenty of design features to visit and use. A cyclists ability to combine public transportation (especially rail) with a bicycle here greatly improves the area that can be covered efficiently. Timed traffic lights in the downtown core along with “bicycle boulevards” in our neighborhoods lends a safe atmosphere and we have a new “European Style” cycle track to roll in near the Portland State University Campus.  See examples of combined traffic calming techniques partnered with storm water management facilities, as the city rolls out improved Neighborhood Green-ways. Cross the Willamette on our newest 15ft wide off street bike and pedestrian crossing via the Morrison Bridge. Experience the Tom McCall waterfront park esplanade that used to be an eight lane freeway and learn about our new light-rail and street car loop that is in construction now. This topic is a favorite of our guides and we love to show off “the office”.
