Meet Tanja Beer

Hi everyone,

my name is Tanja and I’m going to work with Portland Bicycle Tours for the next six months. I have been studying American Studies and Political/Social Studies for three years in Stuttgart, Germany. At Portland Bicycle Tours I’m especially going to work in marketing and sales, but I’m also very excited to join the countless bike events that Portland’s bike community offers! I traveled several times to the USA and visited Portland twice last year. The experiences I’ve had and impressions I’ve got from this city during my visits, have led to the decision of participating in an internship in Portland after finishing University. It is not a typical American city, the boost of a community that is looking forward to a bike friendly and green future is felt almost everywhere. During my first few days in town, I already enjoyed the privilege of being a part of the opening of the new bike ped infrastructure on the Morrison Bridge. I’m very excited to be here in Portland. It’s awesome to be a member of this vibrant and ever growing bike community!

E-mail me if you have questions about our marketing projects @ beer.tanja@gmail.com

Loaning Bikes for Bike To Blazers

FANS READY TO ROLL TO THE ROSE GARDEN FOR ANNUAL BIKE TO BLAZERS GAME

Third-annual event will pay homage to Bill Walton’s route across the Steel Bridge

PORTLAND, OR — The Trail Blazers enjoy a connection to Portland’s bike community that spans as far back as Bill Walton, perhaps the most celebrated bike enthusiast in team history.

On Wednesday, fans can be part of this Portland tradition at the third annual Bike-to-Blazers game against Golden State, riding to the game over the Steel Bridge as Walton himself often did.

Cyclists – including Portland Mayor Sam Adams, Metro councilor Rex Burkholder and Bike Portland editor Jonathan Maus, the founder of the event – will meet for a rally at the Salmon Street Fountain at McCall Waterfront Park at 5:30 p.m.

“Thousands of cyclists commute by the Rose Quarter each day,” Portland Trail Blazers President Larry Miller said. “Bike to Blazers encourages active transportation and creates a fun event for Trail Blazers fans and cyclists. Our hope is that people see biking to games as a fun, healthy alternative to driving.”

The event is in partnership with the Bicycle Transportation Alliance, BikePortland.org, Lloyd TMA, Portland Water Bureau, Metro, Community Cycling Center, Portland Bicycle Tours, and the Office of Mayor Sam Adams.

“Trail Blazers basketball and bicycling are two great Portland pastimes. I’m excited to see these two pastimes come together to create an exceptional event that will hopefully become a Portland tradition,” Mayor Adams said.

Highlights of the event will include:

“Biking to Trail Blazers games is not only a fun way to get to the Rose Garden, it’s a way to enhance public health and create more livable, vibrant communities,” said Stephanie Noll of the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA).”

The Trail Blazers are encouraging Portlanders to participate—even if they’re not daily bike commuters. Portland Bicycle Tours is loaning bikes to fans that want to join in the festivities, but are without a bike of their own. Those who cannot make the rally are still encouraged to bike to the game, using route planning assistance from the City of Portland and Tri-Met. Limited covered bike parking is now available at the Rose Garden.

The Bike to Blazers event follows a successful NBA Green Week partnership with the NBA and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), during which the Trail Blazers hosted the US Green Building Council and NBA leadership to officially celebrate the Rose Garden’s LEED Gold certification, an accomplishment made possible in part because of the team’s commitment to sustainable transportation efforts.

“Being green is part of Portlanders’ DNA,” Miller said. “We want to make it easier for fans to reduce their environmental footprint with a full range of transportation options.”

Miller added that bike-friendly development will play an important role creating a more green, active and enlivened Rose Quarter.

“New amenities for cyclists and active transportation options for visitors have been at the center of our development conversations,” Miller said. “We want to make biking to the Rose Quarter a convenience, because we recognize the benefits to the environment, to public health and to adjacent neighborhoods.”

Special thanks to BikePortland.org for helping make this year’s ride the biggest yet.

Travel Portland Fam Tour

Monday we had a great Travel Portland Fam Tour by bike with some guests from Europe and United Airlines. They cruised the West Side waterfront path and pedaled through the SW Waterfront business district, before returning through the Tom McCall Waterfront Park and Old Town/ China Town.  There was even time to stop at the aerial tramway at OHSU and talk about the sights. Lots of smiles, and even some sunshine breaks on this ride. Thanks to new paving projects on the waterfront trail, our ride was a little smoother than usual – great progress – I’m looking forward to the new signage that is supposed to be installed on the trail as well. Thanks to Travel Portland for putting this together.

New Sierra Cascades Bicycle Route

ADVENTURE CYCLING UNVEILS SIERRA CASCADES BICYCLE ROUTE AT NORTHWEST EVENTS

New 2,389-mile route will guide cyclists along the splendor of the Pacific Crest

Adventure Cycling Association’s Jim Sayer (executive director) and Jenn Milyko (cartographer) will visit Washington and Oregon, April 6-8, 2010, to unveil the Association’s brand new, 2,389-mile Sierra Cascades Bicycle Route and to share the latest news on bicycle travel and adventures in North America. Events will be held at the Seattle, Portland, and Eugene REIs (see below for event details).

A 2,389-mile road-based journey, the new route stretches from Sumas, Washington, through the Cascade Range into Oregon, southward through the Sierra Nevada Range, to the Tehachapi and San Bernardino Mountains in Southern California, ending in Tecate, California, at the Mexican border. The route roughly parallels the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, passing around and through many of North America’s mountain gems, from Mount Rainier and Mount Hood to Lake Tahoe, Yosemite and Kings Canyon National Parks.

Sierra Cascades maps will be available later in April. The new route takes the Adventure Cycling Route Network over 40,000 miles (40,633, to be precise), the equivalent of riding around the planet more than one-and-a-half times! Adventure Cycling’s network is the largest mapped cycling route system in the world.

The Northwest events will be grand celebrations with Adventure Cycling’s friends at REI who provided financial support for route research. For years, REI has generously supported Adventure Cycling’s development of routes such as the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route and the Underground Railroad Bicycle Route. REI has provided $30,000 in support of the Sierra Cascades route.

Join Adventure Cycling staff and members to celebrate with refreshments and fun, engaging presentations on the new Sierra Cascades Bicycle Route and the latest news on bicycle travel.
